Blackouts

Creating a quality blackout is a far more complex alchemy than it appears. What the eye perceives as a uniform, velvety surface is the result of a series of precise decisions: machine settings and modifications, a fine understanding of each skin type, sustained speed of execution, and management of the healing process. Six years alongside Dekalcomanu, the world pioneer of this style, for whom I served as translator and assistant during masterclasses given to some of the most renowned tattooists in the world, gave me access to a body of knowledge that I continue to refine with every session.
A full arm can be completed in under two and a half hours. Some choose to go through the experience in two stages: the sensation is intense, running through the nervous system like a long, deep wave, and the body deserves to be respected within its limits.

Blackout does not cover; it repairs. It gives the skin a second life, a soft black page on which a new story can begin. Old tattoos, scars, marks you no longer wanted to carry: nothing is erased in the literal sense, but everything is transformed, reconciled, restored to a form of unity. The skin does not forget; it begins again.

Healing is a stage in its own right. In less than a week, the skin sheds like a snake and reveals this new surface. I always take the time to explain each step when we meet.

What I have observed over the years is that this transformation of the skin often calls for another, more inward one. Beneath the black, something settles, a space opens, and a weight that some have carried for a long time finally finds somewhere to be laid down. Blackout is a contemporary rite, at once mysterious and deeply human: a way of giving yourself back a blank page for what comes next.
